As the warmer summer months begin to arrive, it is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy the sun. However, if you have a small baby in tow it can be tricky knowing what to do with them during summer to make the most of the beautiful season.

If you have a newborn baby, navigating the summer months can be difficult, as you need to ensure your baby is safe in the heat. However, this doesn’t mean that you have to hide inside all summer long. There are plenty of ways you can enjoy the warm summer months with your baby, with lots of enjoyable activities you can do together.

In this article, we will explore some of the ways you can take advantage of the warm summer weather and make some treasured memories with your sweet newborn baby.

Summer morning walks

Newborns and Summer: Making Memories in the Sun

Getting outside bright and early is the perfect way to enjoy the warm weather before the heat gets too intense. You will likely be awake early with a newborn anyway, so why not make the most of the lovely weather with a pleasant morning walk?

Invest in a pram or a baby carrier, ensuring that your little one is protected from the sun’s rays, and enjoy pointing out what you can see and hear while you walk.
If you live in a town or city you can incorporate a welcome stop at a coffee shop or if you live in the country you can point out the sights and sounds of nature such as birds singing and colourful flowers. Taking a walk with your baby will be great for you both as it provides a healthy dose of fresh air and plenty of sensory stimulation for your baby.

Water Play at Home

Embrace the warm weather with some water play at home. Although your newborn will be too young for a paddling pool then they can enjoy the feeling of water on their skin, which will be a much-appreciated treat if there is a heatwave. You don’t need much water to have some fun, and you can use a shallow dish or tub of lukewarm water. Gently splash your baby’s feet in the water or place droplets of water on their skin.

Ensure that you are supporting your baby during the play and be mindful not to leave them alone in the water. This activity is fun and easy and will encourage your baby’s relationship with water.

Newborns and SUMMER: Pack a picnic

Let’s continue our “Newborns and Summer” article.

Getting outside into nature is a great way to enjoy the outdoors with your baby. You can do this by choosing a local park or nature spot and packing a picnic. Pack a comfy blanket, any milk your baby might need, and snacks for yourself. Take some blowing bubbles and something to play music and head to a shady spot in the park to relax.

Ensure that your baby is protected from the sun with a sunhat and find a shady spot under a tree. You can also buy small UV tents or parasols that you can take with you to provide extra protection.

Lie your baby on the blanket looking up at the trees or engage in some light tummy time while you talk, blow bubbles, or sing along to the music.

Baby-Friendly Beach Time

If you can make it to the beach, seize the opportunity and have a beach day with your baby. The beach can be very enjoyable and full of sensory stimulation such as the soft sand, and lapping waves.

Try to aim for a time when the sun is less intense such as late afternoon and make sure to dress your baby in light layers that cover their arms and legs.

Stock up on beach essentials, such as sun hats, and easy-to-slip-on shoes for yourself. Take a big sun umbrella and a beach blanket and enjoy exploring the beach with your baby. If the water is safe to swim in you could even enjoy a shallow dip with your newborn, and you can find lots of baby UV swimsuits to help protect them from the sun.

Newborns and SUMMER: Explore a farmer’s market

During the summer months, there are usually many lovely farmers’ markets selling local produce and craft items. Exploring a vibrant market with new sights, sounds, and smells will be interesting for both you and your baby. Check your local notice boards and information pages online to find one near you and set out on an adventure with your baby.

Many markets start early in the morning or last until late afternoon, so you can plan your trip to avoid the intense midday sun. Taking your baby along to an interesting market will be a great experience for you both, and you never know what you might find on your travels.

Many markets sell inviting treats such as handmade cheeses, specialty bread, and even pretty flowers. Check the area around the market for local cafes and restaurants and make a day of it exploring your local area and treating yourself to a rewarding cup of coffee.

Enjoy the summer sun with your baby

The summertime provides endless opportunities to bond and play with your newborn while enjoying the warm weather outdoors. From sunny morning walks to dreamy park picnics, there is no reason to hide inside when the summer months arrive.

As long as you take care to protect your baby from the sun’s intense heat by avoiding the hottest times of the day and covering up your baby, you will be able to make some lovely memories. Invest in some summer essentials such as sunhats, parasol-umbrellas, and a good picnic blanket. Make sure to take plenty of water for yourself to drink and pack your baby’s milk in insulated bottle warmers to keep them at the ideal temperature. T
